NZ flies AKL-CNS vv. No NZ flights within Australia though and no other *A flights to CNS.
I would guess award availability to be much better on the flights between NZ and USA via the islands - reason is hardly any business or through pax (eg continuing on to/from europe) and given a choice people choose a shorter nonstop flight with new seats and IFE over a longer flight with stop in the middle of the night and old seats and IFE. Most pax on the flights via the islands want to visit one or more of the islands. Plus if you're not looking to stopover en route you may not even be aware the flights exist.
