Here is my experience with this issue. I learned that if you ask to combine the reservations--even if you're already checked in--the rate changes; it goes back to the higher price. I have to check out, and then check back in again to get the lower rates. Even though I check out and check back in again, for HH purposes, they don't count as separate stays!
