Actually she was told at check in the they were not able to give her as suite, which is not quite the same as there are no suites available. My guess is that this Marriott property, like many, follows the rule and does not upgrade elites to suites, and by saying that they were not able to upgrade her to a suite makes sense in this regard.

While this is disappointing, it is not bad service IMO.
