I keep seeing these aircraft with STAR ALLIANCE across them, sometimes subtitled "United". What are they? I saw a small 737 at IAD, some widebody in ORD and then a 777 parked in SEA with its engine half taken apart.

Are these from a lease pool that Star Alliance holds for alliance members to dip into as needed?
