I have been on many flights that continued to somewhere and have never seen through passengers asked to leave the plane. Most recently, I stayed on board AA 2007, flying BOS-SJC, during its stop at ORD this past Saturday (May 27). The only rule is, as JGR01 posted, if you leave you must take all your stuff with you.
