What I needed was BOS -> MIA -> VVI (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) but what I got was BOS -> MIA -> LPB (La Paz, Bolivia), the MIA flight to Bolivia is flight 922 with stops at LPB and VVI and inadvertently booked at end point in LPB and not VVI (flight number is the same for both).

So the actual path of flight 922 is MIA -> LPB -> VVI and return is LPB -> VVI -> MIA. What should be reasonably simple (instead of getting off in LPB I stay on until VVI and on return I would be boarding in VVI instead of LPB) seems impossible without completely canceling and reissueing the ticket (currently with a change fee of $100 and fare increase of $600).

In talking with CS at AA (who was very nice and trying to be helpful) had no alternatives other than: 1) cancel and reissue, it seems the LPB -> VVI segment can't be booked separately so I can't simply add that and I can't just not board return in LPB and instead board in VVI, 2) find an alternate carrier in LPB to get round trip LPB -> VVI and nest this flight in my original.

Are there any other options anyone can suggest other than 1) and 2)?

Thanks,
While it might be obvious to you what your intentions were originally, it isn't obvious to the airline. You booked a ticket to city A, but really want to go to city B. So, a reissue would be in order. You might be able to convince AA to let you board the return flight at VVI because that involves a shorter distance on the return route. However, the outbound flight to VVI is beyond your original destination. This way, you would need only a one way ticket outbound. I think you need to decide which of the offered choice you are going to choose. Consider the cost an educational expense
