I did a Coupon Connection trade. The trader was able to call and request an upgrade for me using AS upgrade cert and it worked.

I went from [Confident]. Now if only all my free AA EXP upgrades come through....
Maybe you got lucky andrzej because I've called AS res to upgrade an AA-coded AS flight and had no luck, as Gold, even if I wanted to use a cert of miles
