It's quite immediate. And any miles over the required will be lost...

ie say you're Silver now, and you're aiming for Gold. You need another 700 miles for that. You do a flight that's 3000 miles. You get 2300 miles over the required points. You get Gold but you lose 2300 miles (as status points) as your account zeros down. Try and take the exact number of miles when possible.
