Seems the agent put my FF number in her reservation and it treated her as Gold. Not sure if this is a systematic problem (seems like plenty of people would have tried) or if the agent did something special at the counter to get my number in her reservation.
Of course, I'm not going to be surprised if they pull the miles from my account at some point in the future, nor will I be mad. Fortunately for my wife, they can't unring the bell of her free upgrade. I will be mad if they give me any grief because it was the agent's doing and not mine.
Here, I'll make it easy for you. Your story is that you gave your wife's number when making the reservation. When you went to redeem the voucher, the agent asked for your FF number to redeem the voucher. Of course, you had no idea -- and are very surprised -- that the agent actually put your FF number in your wife's reservation (after all, why on earth would the agent do that?). When your wife checked in, they offered her an free upgrade to F. Of course, she accepted. After all, who wouldn't accept it? END OF STORY!
