I remember one such ride across the pond. That was on an AA 777 (JFK-LHR). It was very turbulent at ~35,000 ft. but when the pilot took it to about 40,000 it got much better. Someone more knowledgable might be able to answer if the 757's (CO LIS-EWR) capacity to go up to a higher altitude is restricted.
