Well, in some cases we have family we want to visit, and we just don't want to drive for a couple of hours at the end of a long plane flight.
But actually, this is why I use my FF miles on US to Canada flights whenever possible. I fly at least once a year from SFO to YUL to visit family, and this will be the fifth consecutive year I'm spending miles to do it instead of dollars. I find this route to be a good exception to the rule that "it's a waste to spend 25,000 miles on a North American trip", because it's usually so expensive.
