OT: Ever been overtaken at 36000 feet?

I was on a flight flying over Scandinavia in a BA Airbus (319 I think), when I looked out of the window & a 747 was heading in the same direction & overtook us fairly quickly. I couldn't see what airline the other plane was though. Does this kind of thing happen often - do 747's have a higher cruising speed than smaller Airbuses?
