UPDATE: My wife ended up in first on both flights and the miles for one segment have posted to my account. I had her check in at the counter with a human so I would be there in case there was a problem, but it went smoothly.
Seems the agent put my FF number in her reservation and it treated her as Gold. Not sure if this is a systematic problem (seems like plenty of people would have tried) or if the agent did something special at the counter to get my number in her reservation.
Of course, I'm not going to be surprised if they pull the miles from my account at some point in the future, nor will I be mad. Fortunately for my wife, they can't unring the bell of her free upgrade. I will be mad if they give me any grief because it was the agent's doing and not mine.
