Well, the cost to ship the car is probably high, too. I remember 3-4 years ago, it was about $600 to ship a car from Missouri to Virginia. My guess is that WA to TX would set you back $1,000.

For a lot of corporate relocations, they give you this option. Buy one-way flights, ship the car. Or you can drive and get reimbursed for mileage + receipts. (Although the OP doesn't sound like he/she is describing a corp relo.)
