dukieee...just came across your post while browsing about...here's my belated 2 cents...forget Adak and go to the Bering Sea islands instead (Pribilofs or St Lawrence/Gambell) (they're even more remote, if we're still looking for remote ) Adak does have places to stay (they are the old housing units from the NAS that was decommissioned about ten years ago) and you definitely want a roof over your head. I wasn't too excited about Adak...too windy or foggy most of the time to get out and enjoy the incredible scenery...it's an naval old base that got closed down is all, really.

If you want the Aleutians, Unalaska (further up the chain toward the mainland) and Dutch Harbor offer all the good things about Adak and, as far as I'm concerned, none of the drawback--same history, same scenery, more accessibility in terms of stomping around, hotels, more likely to get in/out on the planes (that's another thing--you could get to Anchorage [the jumping-off point for the Aleutians] and end up sitting there for god knows how long before they can get a plane in or out) (and Anchorage is NOT remote!).

The islands, though--ah, the Pribilofs--go there!! (I'll carry your bags for you if you have throw-away miles ) St Michaels or St George...wild places, native culture/art/artifacts, Russian culture/art/artifacts, birds, marine life, they've got it all. Nome is the jumping-off spot--which is a great destination, too, in case you get delayed by weather--and, in terms of people who've ever been there, there just aren't many--you'll definitely have bragging rights! St Lawrence/Gambell are great, too--a fair number of Yupik and Inupiaq artists and craftspeople active.

I'd love to see your post of your decision and post-trip wrap--wherever you go, godspeed and safe home
