When I was comped to PLT on AA, befoer I got to EXP, I paid for every upgrade and never begrudged it, at the cost of $25 for a 500-mile upgrade sticker. My partner is PLT and has upgraded every flight this year (close to 50 so far) by paying for stickers. I disagree that upgrades should be handed out free to those who don't place enough value on them to dig a little bit into their own pockets.
