I personally try to use Priceline first when I need a airport hotel for a night or two before looking at other options - my personal preference is to only bid up to $40 for any airport hotel though. Otherwise I'd just book through the hotel, accumulate points etc.
Only problem is SAN airport is so close to downtown, it doesn't really have any airport hotels ala LAX, SFO etc.
There's a Sheraton right across Harbor drive (the airport access rd) from the airport, but even that's more of a 'nicer' joint than what a typical airport hotel would be.
I'd still consider priceline, and consult betterbidding.com to see what you can find, but there aren't any airport hotels in the traditional sense.
