I don't see a problem with leaving early as long as all passengers that are confirmed on the flight are on board. You never know what kind of ATC, weather delays could happen especially in airports such as ORD and with storm season coming upon us. There is also no point waiting around for a few possible passengers that aren't even guaranteed on the flight. I understand your point as I have strolled up to stand-by on a flight that was closed early, however I understand UA's prespective from a business and ontime standpoint. There is an entire plane of other passengers and a schedule the aircraft has to follow that they take into consideration as well

I agree that if the airlines can get away early they will. At LHR there is a slack period for transatlantic flights Mid afternoon (between 2.45 and 5pm) where slot times can be adjusted and as long they can get Transatlantic clearance from Shannon they can go (if you listen to channel 9 some time clearance in given in the air), and I have pushed back from the gate and departed 30mins ahead of schedule with UA.
