Let me summarize the opposing viewpoint: one can not take appearance into decision-making.
So, if you are Asian-looking, it is wrong to ask if you speak English because this would be based on appearance.
Yet for some reason no one has a problem asking teenagers if they are 15 years old and thus can sit in the exit row.
