Macau is a really expensive place to go to the mainland from. Take a ferry to HKG, then call one of the many travel agents to get a ticket HKG- Kunming (as low as US $200).

You could conceivably travel cheaper from Shenzhen, but it might add even more hassle.

Better yet, ask a BKK travel agent for discounts BKK-Kunming nonstop.
