I'm not too sure if you can stay airside or not. I've seen people sleeping in the airport at 4am but they were by the baggage claims or by the USO (Military) lounge.

There's a couple of hostels a quick bus ride downtown on 5th st. that I'd stay at before ever sleeping at the airport. The hostels run ~$20/night and have a real good location so you can actually see a little bit of downtown SAN before you head back to Germany, and most importantly, get some sleep.
