Not really a surprise as an A380 is not suited for intra-Japan operations and with new airports springing up all over the islands, NRT slots won't really be that critical for them.
Along those lines, the construction of a few new runways in key parts of the world and much of the "need" for the A380 simply vanishes. Wouldn't surprise me to see Airbus lobby heavily against expansion/replacement of those airports.
