I've got to get down to JNB later this month. I have used KLM via AMS in the past, but am now considering using SAA because they are star alliance now (I am Star Gold via my UA 1K status).

I ride in economy, so, securing bulkhead or exit row seating is key to me. I'm hoping folks with experience on SAA, or dealing with SAA, can give me some idea of what to expect. In particular, will I be able reserve exit row seating? Will SAA honor that reservation, or, do they simply treat it as a "request" subject to change at the gate? Will my Star Alliance Gold status mean anything?

I've read elsewhere about folks thinking they had seats on the upper deck of the 744, only to find that the gate agents gave them some other less desireable seats. Is this a frequent occurance?
