Qantas Frequent Flyer Program then the points cost is based on "Trips" and the distance of each.
A trip's distance is calculated as the sum of the segment distances. In the context of this thread a trip ends when there is a stopover or a change of carrier. Assuming neither of these is occurring and the flights are direct BOM-LHR & LHR-SFO, the trip distance is calculated as the distance from BOM to LHR plus the distance from LHR-SFO.
