Redeem the miles for award in other's names, gifting the last few thousand miles (until the account is clear). If you aren't sure when you're going to fly, gift to the class of service expected, then change plans later. It's very difficult to move miles from one account to another. Usually much easier to gift tickets, then it is to gift miles.
