It must be a Y chromosome thing... this trait has clearly been noted at least since Robert Benchley wrote about Asking for Directions in the '30s. (You might like his solution, Cholula.)

Personally, I think a significant % of all the posts on FT are of the "what to expect in X situation" kind made (by males) who are desperate for the info and SO happy to discover that they can get it anonymously.
