I have saved thousands of dollars if not tens of thousands over the years by changing reservations at hotels pretty much constantly. If the price drops a dollar, I'll change it as long as it doesn't cost me anything to change.

I don't know if they can tell or not, but it shouldn't matter. If they didn't want people booking the rate, they shouldn't be offering it.
