To change a reservation you go to your account under travel planner and click on an existing reservation. You will get a choice of changing the reservation or canceling it. Choose the "change" option and you will see the current rates. If the current rate/room class is better you can change it right there. A very simple operation.

One problem is that hotel special offers such as double points, 3rd night free, etc. will not show up and you will have to go to the hotel site to check for the specials.]
