Always nice to be right. We travelled around Italy during the winter olympics, and every single internet cafe (including the terminals at the olympic info offices) asked for a passport #. You may not need to register if you are using a hotel terminal (or perhaps WiFi) but you definitely will at any pay-per-use computer.
