Mauritius
Ok, so I've been planning this vacation for a while and finally got everything settled today.
My husband and I will be heading to Mauritius on August 18th (arrival on August 20th) and departing on August 26th (although the flight leaves at 11:30PM, so that day is really completely open.)
Part of our trip will be reserved for scouting, as we're planning on moving there and starting up a business or acquiring a current one within the next 5 years, but for the rest of the time, we're planning on visiting the *real* island.
Therefore, I'm looking for suggestions on places to eat, things to not miss - we'll have an SUV to tool around in (no environmental comments please - that's what the rental car place offered us) so there are no holds barred on where, and we're adventureous so we're completely open as to what.
We'll be at the Hilton for 5 nights and the Le Meridien for one but we don't care how far away things are.
That said:
Any recommendations for local restaurants? (I don't mean the hotel restaurants like at the One & Only, I mean LOCAL. I've got a pretty good idea of what to expect at the resorts.) When I go to Bermuda, I *have* to go to Dennis' Hideaway, which is basically someone's house in the middle-of-nowhere-parish, but it's the best restaurant ever, so I'm all about the word of mouth.
Any things we must do/see (touristy or not)? I have a list of all the places that all the tours go to (crater, tea garden, etc) and all the places that we're not supposed to go at all (jungle due to dengue fever or something like that), but if there's something super-cool that we must do above all else, I want to know it.
Also, since we're going in the middle of winter, does anyone know what they're fishing for? My husband is a big saltwater fisherguy and he wants to know
1) if they're fishing
2) what they're catching
3) who to go with
I know that the hotels arrange charters, and we've been warned that even the reputable local places kinda fleece the tourists, so if he does go out (unless we get a good recommendation otherwise) it will be set up through the hotel concierge.
Any and all information is appreciated.
Thanks!
