The following procedure may help some customers. Effective Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, customers who wish to reissue an existing ticket for a higher fare (i.e., exchanging a Q or H fare for an M fare) will be able to do so through Delta reservations, ticket offices or airport locations. This will be valid for tickets issued on or before December 16, 2002, and for travel on or after January 1, 2003. No changes will be allowed to flight, date, origin, destination or stopovers. Subject to availability in the requested fare class. Fare differential collected at time of reissue. The $100 Administrative Service Charge will be waived.

Call me crazy, but I just did this! It was quite a struggle, more than 45 minutes mostly on hold, because the SMS agent had heard of the new rule but never used it -- not too surprisingly! He had to get a supervisor to help him, and both of them spent quite a while searching for the applicable code to waive the $100 change fee. Whew!
Anyway, I had only one itinerary in 2003 at less than K fare, and now that one is K, too. It cost me $98.38, and I was able to upgrade both long legs (but not a Delta Connection flight in between). Can't really complain, and now I'll get two nice meals that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise, as well as full MQM credit.
