I left work close to 2 hours late and drove home in near tears that night. Not only was it a horrible night for the passengers, it was a horrible night for us agents. I have worked for the airline for awhile now, and I have never witnessed something go this bad in OAK. What's the saying, "once in a blue moon".
I cannot and will not go into specifics of what happened and what i'm finding out happened, for obvious reasons (employee here).....I do agree, it could have been handled much better! As agents, I feel my crew did an amazing job at giving the passengers the information that was given to us.
What made the whole delay/cancel even worse, is there was no where to place all of the passengers. Usually if anything gets delayed for awhile and we can see that it won't be going any where soon, we use Southwest. But they were pretty much full....all night. So the last resort was placing people up at the hotels...which is ALWAYS the last resort. We don't want to do that and we know our passengers just want to get to wherever they were going.
It was bad, and I feel very sorry for every passenger who was on that flight. I am very sorry it happened.
Having worked for a major airline, I am extremely sympathetic to the agents' plight. I usually try to be very nice and jovial.
My question to you would be the following (I'm just pointing it out -- not asking for answers): After a couple of hours, did anyone call the OAK station manager (if he/she wasn't on-site) and have them speak with the operations center manager in Seattle?? By your title, I see that you are a lead and were presumably talking to Seattle yourself (or designated someone to do it).
This sounds like a total meltdown in the operations center on a maintenance issue. I understand that some things are "not known and are unknowable" on mechanical delays, but to leave you all at the airport with NO alternative plan "B" is really not acceptable.
Honestly, I am flying WN a lot more this year because of what I experienced on AS last year.
