For SPG Golds, Upgrades generally mean to a dedicated SPG floor (in hotels that have them). The rooms are no different than regular rooms. All you get is a free bottle of water, a bathrobe, and a USA Today that they still charge you .30 for. Every once in awhile a gold will get an u/g to a club floor or suite of some sort...but this is very rare in the U.S. Best bet for a true upgrade as a Gold is overseas, in Asia or Europe. I have only received one true upgrade in the two years I've been gold...at the Westin Rotterdam from a standard to executive room.
