I'm not sure about the battery thing. The check-in agent at SQ in YVR told me no batteries. When the security guy looked at my digital camera and was about to turn it on, I told him I had put the batteries in my one checked bag as I had been advised to do. No comment from him. He went on about his business.
The laptop was no problem--I had to turn it on and off.
