I originally fell into this thread because I once spent a fairly useless 4or 5 hours or so at LAX--not enough time to go anywhere by public transportation and get back by the recommended check-in time. In case anyone is interested, the police will not let you walk out of the airport on foot!
The closest hotel to the airport is the Radisson. Just hop on their shuttle, and walk out of the hotel. You can stroll north on Sepulveda to get to In-N-Out from there.
