Lianluo, first welcome to FlyerTalk and I hope that you will continue to participate in these discussions.

As for viable alternatives, these have been discussed many times and a search will bring them up. To give you some examples, we should start screening cargo that goes into the belly of the plane I am riding on. We should install puffer machines to detect explosives. We now have in place a different attitude towards hijackers that did not exist until the last moments of Flight 93. We will no longer cooperate. We now have hardened cockpit doors.

We should do away with searching for non-credible weapons, i.e. items that won't bring an airplane down. Searching for all other items creates too much noise. We should do away with SSSS and the shoe carnival. I am sure that others can chime in about additional ideas.
