In SE Asia, anytime I'm on a first visit and unsure, I just wear a suit and tie, and then adapt accordingly.

Personally, in KL, outside of the financial institutions, I've come across everything from 'suit and tie' down to 'polo shirt and chinos' inside the same industry.
