Any of you Chinahands know how long I need to factor in to clear customs and immigration at HKG? Do you reckon BA will interline bags onto the domestic airline?

You do not need to clear immigration/customs at HKG to go to mainland China. HKG is still a Special Administration Area and is not in theory, part of China .. yet.
If you show both your tickets, BA should be able to interline through to final destination.
