I cannot imagine ever not allowing enough lead time to risk not having travel documents in time for a flight. But to others that it did happen to I doubt the airlines were too sympathetic.
There's sense in what you write, but what's the point? Smacking someone in the head (whether they deserve it or not) after the fact when they're asking for suggestions and options is not useful. Seems just mean to me.
