Thats not quite correct IME, I had to travel SYD-HKG-CAN a couple of months ago, my QF ticket/itin was seperate to my CZ flight to CAN. At the transfer desk airside there was no problem with my bags not being interlined, they sent someone out to the baggage claim to collect my bags, and recheck them. The only thing is they wont issue your BP for your onward flight until they have your bags rechecked, it can take 30 mins and you have to sit at the transfer desk waiting, but still easier than having to clear customs/immigration collect your bags goto check-in clear immigration again.
