Aha, now I understand. As a non-status guest at a Marriott down south (California somewhere) I had this happen to me. They made no offer of helping me find alternative accomodation. Having read a great book called "How to Complain" early in life, I calmly looked around the lobby, loudly said "that couch looks very comfortable, where is the nearest washroom so that I can change into my PJs?", and within minutes was entering my suddenly available room. I'm sure they could have called security and so on, but it was obviously easier to pick on the next poor non-status guest.
Of course you can't do that on airplanes...
