No need for a full laptop: Skype works very well with a Pocket PC (I use an older Dell Axim). You can just hold the Axim up to your ear (the speaker is on the back, so the microphone is then on the side away from your mouth, but it works fine), though it's better with headphones (removes feedback, and you can speak directly into the built in microphone). With decent headphones (e.g., Shure E2Cs or better) the sound quality is better than a conventional telephone.
