I'm just guessing from the fact that you were flying back from PVG so I could be completely off base, but I wonder if subtle racism had something to do with it?
I have witnessed on countless occasions people of non-western-European descent being 'talked down to' in the US, especially if there is a strong accent.

(I have so far been fortunate enough not to have been a recipient of such treatment, at least not any that I noticed.)
We are both European as were the FA's involved. Also...it could not have been age related as they were just as old as we are. There is a major difference in appearance as my wife looks about 15 years younger than they did.
I might add that I do not expect any real response to my letter to UA or do I expect that there will be any redress of any type. They will simply accept the report of the employee's and not believe the passenger. The FA will be backed up by others on the flight even though they did not witness any of the incident. They will just agree because that is what they were told happened.
This issue here is really that you are really at the mercy of these employees if they choose to make you the victim. The quick charge of security threat makes any reaction from you mute.
