I think the concensus is the Starwoods no fee card is the best fit for most. The DL amex platninum is of value only if you charge more han $50,000 per year or need the status miles. And the Amex platinum is of benifit to only a very few high end folks.

Commercial? I don't work for Amex - in fact, they're a competitor.
On the companion ticket, it's good on K-fares and above (upto Y). Although not the cheapest, K is still fairly reasonable. I've never used the companion ticket b/c I usually do F (or YV or YG) and the voucher isn't good for that.
As to the companion not earning miles, I'm not aware of any free tickets that earn miles.
