In the USA I can easily go to 3-4 day business trips with a carry on [weights more than 7kgs, but less than 20kgs or per mfgs specs]. I have tried that here in Australia, but it is effectively impossible.
Is waiting 5-10 minutes at the end of a domestic flight that much of an issue(obviously internationals take longer but thats a different issue) ? If there is a need for larger amounts of lugagge on a short trip ( ie > 2 * 7Kg) then I just check a bag in. Given the poor baggage reclaim service (and the randomness of whether the bags will even come on the flight) in the US, I can see why there would be a desire to avoid doing so over there
