Actually, I'm not so sure I'd say the 777's are a better bet than the other A/C. A good number of frequent travelers (like me ) specifically try to schedule 777 legs because they're a lot more fun than any of the narrowbodies, especially if you get the upgrade. C on a 3-class plane beats the pants of any 2-class F cabin.

I've found the competition for upgrades to be pretty fierce in general on the 777's, but I would definitely second the comment that day & time make a big difference. If you're trying to get any upgrade on Monday earlier in the day or on Thursday or Friday afternoon, forget about it as a 2P. I feel lucky as a 1P to get any of those upgrades.

On the other hand, my upgrade on the morning 777 flight IAD-DEN last Friday cleared right 73 hours before (I guess they gave me a bonus hour on the window). I was surprised, especially when it turned out that the flight went out 100% full. Generally, on any hub-to-hub flights on peak travel days, any upgrades I get clear at the gate only.

Of course, your mileage may vary. If you're able to work around the peak times, you might have a shot at an upgrade here and there. My one piece of advice, particularly for a 2P: request an upgrade on every flight you can. If you try to "cherry-pick" the best flights for upgrades (unless those happen to be the far off-peak flights), you're likely to have your e500's expire before you get to use them.
