For the most part, they are, especially in the middle-aged range. All they can talk about is their job, sports, and what was on TV last night--all in short sentences with limited vocabularies. The shining exceptions were snapped up before age 30 by women with better feminine wiles than I.

The strong, silent, anti-intellectual, macho-macho man pattern was probably useful when Americans were concerned mainly with building log cabins and bagging a deer for dinner, but it has outlived its usefulness.

From my experience and the experiences of my friends, I'd have to say that there's an imbalance between the expectations of the two sexes, an imbalance that grows worse with age. The men appear to be looking for a housekeeper with benefits and assume that we will fall all over them because they have a good job and own a house, while the women are looking for someone who is good company.

The straight single men on this board should be advised that many American women find British Isles accents (English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish--it doesn't matter) appealing.
