I was using my SWU to upgrade flights from PVG - SFO - LAS earlier this year. The PVG-SFO leg didn't clear but they still deducted my SWU for the SFO-LAS leg. I called the MP desk and they credited me back. I once did get an op-up on a TED flight from SFO to LAS because of a change of equipment.
