I think there are other 'tools' available (KVS??) but I am not familiar with them.

ExpertFlyer.com has +/- three days for these hidden fares . and also gives some good connecting routing should it find an award/upgrade fare that way (like LGW-RDU-xxx vs LGW-DFW-xxx).

Also, planning as far out as you can get .. then calling and reminding the AAgent of your tier status. I booked an award trip for a friend with no tier status.. no luck .. even though EF said yes. Since I was flying on the same flight .. my EXP status got the award seat for my friend. Wierd and undocumented I know but it does happen...
