I'd always heard that for many airlines ferrying a plane out to Mohave/Victorville (the other boneyards), they'd have their own airlines ferry the plane out there with their own crews, and then they'd pay for ground transport to a nearby airport (some place in Southern California, most likely either ONT or LAX) and deadhead them home.
